![]() Monday, May 20, 2002 Disappearing Cold, evening air wafted aimlessly through the city streets, and a slight breeze tossed discarded newspaper remnants down the mist-filled alley. Slowly, the man walked. On the pavement, light rain gathered in dirty puddles and shimmered from the dim glow of one sole street lamp; water dripped from the rotted corners of open dumpsters; beads of moisture collected on the man’s dark coat and hat. A moonless night sky, clotted by thick gray fog, hung forebodingly low. The road was dark and cavern-like, for the old brick walls of under-kept buildings enclosed it like tall and mangled trees along a wooded path. Dark was his character; dark was the man. Within the fog, his face was indecipherable, but his eyes shone through with a cutting, icy brightness. He was a man out for a walk in the rain, a man walking slowly. His deep eyes glimmered; they glowed with deep understanding, remorse, and despair. Hands in his pockets, eyes cast down upon the many tiny rivers of rainwater, the man walked. He stopped for a moment under the golden-yellow of the street lamp, and the light erased his shadow; he seemed to be thinking. He stood there for a moment before moving on, not wavering, not stirring, staring down into a bleak puddle. Farther down the alley, as he neared the end, as the fog engulfed him, he began to grow fainter. His outline disintegrated; his body blurred into a long, trailing shadow; his shoes tapped quieter and quieter, and he walked on. His presence faded into the fog; he, into the shadows. posted by Shannon | 10:27 PM |
